Table of Contents

Silicone products are manufactured by selecting the right silicone (HCR or LSR), compounding pigments/additives, and molding via compression, transfer, or injection in temperature-controlled tools. Parts are cured (in-mold or oven), optionally post-cured to reduce volatiles, trimmed/finished, and quality-checked. Tooling design and precise control of temperature, pressure, and time determine consistency, cost, and yield.

Manufacturing workflow and methods

  • Product definition: CAD, tolerances, regulatory targets (FDA, LFGB, USP VI), color standards, durometer, and cosmetic class.
  • Material selection: HCR (gum) for compression/transfer/injection; LSR (platinum-cure) for fully automated injection; additives for flame retardance, conductivity, or translucency.
  • Compounding: Base polymer mixed with fillers, pigments, and cure system; for LSR, two-part A/B metered on-machine.
  • Tooling: Steel or aluminum molds with balanced gating, micro-vents, and vacuum; cold runners for LSR.
  • Molding:
    • Compression/transfer (HCR): Preform charging, hot pressing, cavity packing, cure, demold.
    • Injection (HCR): Screw plasticizing, injection into hot cavities, cure, demold.
    • LSR injection: Meter-mix-dispense into closed mold, in-mold cure, robotic demold.
  • Curing: 120–200°C depending on system; post-cure for medical/food grades to reduce volatiles.
  • Finishing: Flash trim, cryo-deflashing, surface textures, primers, printing/laser marking.
  • QA: Durometer, tensile/elongation, dimension, compression set, volatile/odor, migration, and color delta-E.
  • Packaging and traceability: Lot coding, RoHS/REACH statements, CoA/CoC.

Mavicsilicone Pro Tip: In our lab tests at Mavicsilicone, we found that a 2–4°C mold temperature drift can shift durometer by 1–2 Shore A and increase flash. We keep cavity ΔT under 1.5°C, vent depth at 0.015–0.03 mm, and post-cure LSR at 200°C for 4 hours for low-volatile, food/medical parts.

How are silicone products manufactured?

Silicone products are made by compounding silicone with additives, then molding via compression, transfer, or injection. The material is cured in heated molds, demolded, trimmed, and optionally post-cured to meet regulatory limits. Quality checks verify durometer, dimensions, tensile, compression set, and migration before packaging and lot traceability.

Process breakdown

  1. Define function, regulatory class, durometer, and surface requirements.
  2. Choose HCR or LSR grade; compound color/additives.
  3. Engineer mold with balanced runners, vents, and vacuum.
  4. Molding: compression/transfer for larger parts or inserts; injection/LSR for precision and throughput.
  5. Cure and optional post-cure.
  6. Trim/deflash, test, and pack with full traceability.

Mavicsilicone Pro Tip: Our technicians often see surface blushing traced to over-packed cavities or inadequate venting. We improve vent geometry and reduce overfill by 5–8% shot weight, which consistently eliminates blush without compromising fill.

Is silicone expensive to manufacture?

Silicone is mid-cost to manufacture: raw material grade (especially platinum-cure LSR), tooling complexity, part size, and QA requirements drive cost. Compression tooling is cheaper but cycles longer; LSR injection has higher tooling costs but lowest cycle/waste. Unit cost drops substantially at 5k–20k+ pieces due to faster cycles and material efficiency.

Is silicone expensive to manufacture?

Cost drivers and optimization

  • Material: LSR (platinum-cure) > high-consistency rubber (HCR); specialty fillers add cost.
  • Tooling: Cavitation, cold-runner LSR, complex parting lines increase price.
  • Cycle time: LSR fastest; compression slower; directly impacts unit economics.
  • Yield/deflashing: Flash reduction and automation cut labor.
  • Compliance: FDA/USP VI testing and cleanroom processes add overhead.
DriverImpact on CostHow we optimize
Tooling/cavitationAmortized per partRight-size cavities; modular inserts for variants
Material selection$/kg and cure kineticsMatch grade to function; avoid over-specification
Cycle timeMachine/labor minutesCure kinetics tuning; thermal uniformity
Flash/yieldScrap and laborVent/gate optimization; cryo-deflashing
QA/regulatoryTesting/certificationBatch validation plans; shared test libraries

Mavicsilicone Pro Tip: Our technicians often see over-specified materials driving 12–18% cost premiums. We frequently switch to FDA-compliant HCR for non-implant food-contact parts, maintaining performance while cutting resin cost and cycle time.

How to manufacture silicon?

Silicon (the element) is produced by reducing quartz with carbon in electric arc furnaces (~1,800–2,000°C) to metallurgical-grade silicon, refining to polysilicon via Siemens or FBR processes, then growing crystals (Czochralski/float-zone) and slicing wafers. It’s capital- and energy-intensive, not to be confused with silicone elastomer manufacturing.

How to manufacture silicon?

High-level silicon manufacturing flow

  1. Quartz + carbon → metallurgical-grade silicon in an electric arc furnace.
  2. Refining to polysilicon: Siemens (trichlorosilane deposition) or fluidized bed (FBR).
  3. Crystal growth: Czochralski or float-zone ingots.
  4. Wafering, polishing, doping, and device fabrication (semiconductor/solar).

Mavicsilicone Pro Tip: Our technicians often see confusion between silicon and silicone. We manufacture silicone elastomers. For projects needing upstream silicon data, we coordinate with polysilicon suppliers to align on purity and compliance documentation.

How to make silicon products at home?

At home, use RTV (room-temperature-vulcanizing) silicone kits to mold a master. Build a mold box, apply release, mix base and catalyst by weight, degas if possible, pour a thin stream, and cure 6–24 hours. Expect limited precision and performance versus industrial parts; work ventilated and wear gloves.

Simple home workflow (RTV silicone)

  1. Prep: Master part, mold box, RTV silicone, scale, cups, sticks, release, PPE.
  2. Seal master and apply release.
  3. Weigh/mix RTV per datasheet; minimize air.
  4. Vacuum-degas (optional) to 28–29 inHg.
  5. Pour thin stream from height; cure as specified.
  6. Demold; post-cure if needed; cast your part.

Mavicsilicone Pro Tip: Our technicians often see cure inhibition from sulfur-containing clays and tin-cure residues. We recommend platinum-safe clays, fresh cups, and a small spot test before committing a full pour.

What are your wholesale price tiers and MOQ for silicone products?

For custom molded silicone, our typical MOQ is 1,000 units per SKU/color (HCR) and 3,000 units for LSR injection; extrusion MOQs start at 500 m per profile. Tiered pricing improves significantly at 5k–20k+ pieces. Tooling ranges: compression $800–$5,000; HCR injection/LSR $3,000–$20,000+, depending on cavitation/complexity.

Mavicsilicone Pro Tip: Our technicians often see major savings by increasing cavitation and consolidating colors. We recommend designing for a single durometer and limiting colorways at launch, then expanding once demand validates—this routinely cuts unit cost by 12–25%.

Do you manufacture via compression, injection, or LSR, and what are standard lead times?

Yes. We manufacture via compression, HCR injection/transfer, and LSR injection. Typical new-tool lead times: compression 10–15 business days, HCR injection 20–30, LSR 20–35. After T0/T1 approval, mass production runs in 2–6 weeks depending on volume, validation, and secondary operations (printing, bonding, assembly).

LSR InjectionSmall/complex, medical/food contact20–35 days+5–10 days1–2 weeks3–6 weeks to steady state

Mavicsilicone Pro Tip: Our technicians often see timelines compress when DFM is engaged early. Sharing 3D files and tolerance stacks at RFQ lets us lock gating/vents and cavitation in week one—shaving 5–7 days off tool build and reducing first-article iterations.

In summary, to manufacture silicone products efficiently, align material, tooling, and process early, then control cure and venting tightly—Mavicsilicone can help you manufacture silicone products from DFM to validated mass production.
